Daily Quote 8/13/2006

Monday, August 7, 2006.
"A popular Government, without popular information, or the means of acquiring it, is but a Prologue to a Farce or a Tragedy; or, perhaps both. Knowledge will forever govern ignorance: And a people who mean to be their own Governors, must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives."

--James Madison (letter to W.T. Barry, 4 August 1822); Reference: Letters and other Writings of James Madison, vol. 3 (276)

Wouldn't that be wonderful? It is so sad that even with evidence, knowledge, and proof, some people still refuse to see what is so dangerously close to destruction...for partisan, not American, reasons...

"[W]e ought to deprecate the hazard attending ardent and susceptible minds, from being too strongly, and too early prepossessed in favor of other political systems, before they are capable of appreciating their own."

--George Washington (letter to the Commissioners of the District of Columbia, 28 January 1795); Reference: Washington's Maxims, 75.

YES! That's it exactly.

Wednesday, August 9, 2006.
"If we resort for a criterion to the different principles on which different forms of government are established, we may define a republic to be, or at least may bestow that name on, a government which derives all its powers directly or indirectly from the great body of the people, and is administered by persons holding their offices during pleasure for a limited period, or during good behavior."

--James Madison (Federalist No. 39); Reference: Madison, Federalist No. 39 (241)

Here, I do believe he is speaking about direct democracy which was never intended. For good reason, I declare.

Thursday, August 10, 2006.
"The hour is fast approaching, on which the Honor and Success of this army, and the safety of our bleeding Country depend. Remember officers and Soldiers, that you are Freemen, fighting for the blessings of Liberty - that slavery will be your portion, and that of your posterity, if you do not acquit yourselves like men."

--George Washington (General Orders, 23 August 1776); Reference: Maxims of George Washington, Schroeder, ed. (86)

I believe the kind of slavery President Washington is referring to is being under the boot of the British Crown.

Friday, August 11, 2006.
"Jealousy, and local policy mix too much in all our public councils for the good government of the Union. In a word, the confederation appears to me to be little more than a shadow without the substance...."

--George Washington (letter to James Warren, 7 October 1785); Reference: George Washington: A Collection, W.B. Allen, ed. (312)
