Senate approves $60 million for Darfur peacekeepers

The Senate has let the people in Darfur down once more. There was supposed to be more, much more. Sen. Sam Brownback (R) has been working on a bill for over 2 years now that would severely punish Kartoum.
    The Darfur money was included in an amendment sponsored by Sen. Robert Menendez, D-New Jersey, and co-sponsored by Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, and Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kansas. To pay for the proposed peacekeeping mission, funding for a huge U.S. embassy project in Baghdad was cut. (More about the $94.5 billion spending bill)

    Menendez said he hoped a U.N. peacekeeping mission would bring peace and stability to the region. In 2004, Congress enacted a measure to stop trade and separately approved a resolution declaring that the atrocities in western Sudan were acts of genocide. [continue reading]
I hope that someday soon someone on Capital Hill will realize it takes more than just talk and small gestures.
