E-News from America Supports You 10/11/2005

ASY from Coast to Coast and Across the Ocean
America Supports You team members the Seattle Seahawks and Qwest Communications partnered to celebrate Military Appreciation Day when the Seahawks played the Cardinals on September 25. Prior to the game, Seahawks players sent messages of support to service members overseas via the America Supports You website. On game day, representatives from the Air Force, Air Force Reserve, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, National Guard and Navy were present on the field for the coin toss. During the game, fans logged onto www.AmericaSupportsYou.mil to send messages of support to military men and women at high-speed internet terminals at the Qwest Kiosk on the stadium's main concourse.

As part of the Washington Redskins' continued participation with America Supports You, the organization recognizes service members at every game through 'Operation Salute Our Troops.' The program was also featured on the Redskins Cheerleaders' tour to Egypt, Turkey, UAE, Djibouti, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, GTMO, Cuba, Korea, Guam and Hawaii. The team showed their support during their season-opening game on September 11, when the Redskins launched 'Operation Salute Our Troops' during in-stadium ceremonies. The initiative included an America Supports You moment and General Myers, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, who participated in the on-field coin toss ceremony where messages from forward-deployed troops were broadcast on Jumbotron screens. A military fly-over concluded a moving opening ceremony that featured approximately 90,000 fans waving American flags during the National Anthem. The game was broadcast live to 177 military facilities across the globe via the Armed Forces Radio and Television Station (AFRTS).

America Supports You team member Stars for Stripes brings top entertainment to U.S. service members, particularly those serving in remote locations not typically visited by United Service Organizations tours. Judy Seale, Stars for Stripes president and chief executive officer, talked with the American Forces Press Service during an Oct. 4 Stars for Stripes-sponsored concert that featured the Charlie Daniels Band performing for service members attending the Association of the U.S. Army's annual meeting. Army Gen. B.B. Bell, commander of U.S. Army Europe and 7th Army, invited Daniels to perform after watching the legendary fiddler entertain Bell's troops deployed in what he called some of "the most difficult and dangerous places" in U.S. Central Command's operating area. Bell credited Stars for Stripes with bringing "the heart and soul of the nation" to the Armed Forces serving overseas. Read more.

Stars & Stripes noted the America Supports You/Marvel partnership. Marvel and the Army and Air Force Exchange Service are again teaming up to issue 1 million free comic books to U.S. military forces.
