Daily Quote(s) 10/16/2005

"Remember democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide." --John Adams (letter to John Taylor, 15 April 1814), Reference: Original Intent, Barton (335); original The Works of John Adams, C.F. Adams, ed., vol. 6 (484)

It would seem to me this is why we have a republic and a Republican Form of Governmenet. Not the ideological Republican Party! By no means! A Republican Form of Government is one in which people are selected to represent us by our own votes. Amazing, isn't it? Iraqis face death by suicide bombers, and they have a larger turnout than we do! What does that say about them? What does that say about us? What does that say about this statement? Hmm...

"[T]he flames kindled on the 4 of July 1776, have spread over too much of the globe to be extinguished by the feeble engines of despotism; on the contrary, they will consume these engines and all who work them." --Thomas Jefferson (letter to John Adams, 12 September 1821), Reference: Thomas Jefferson: The Apostle of Americanism, Chinard (517); original The Writings of Thomas Jefferson, Memorial Edition, Lipsco

So...this is not the first time, nor will it be the last, that we, as a people, have faced down and battled despotic regimes. This may tie into the previous quote! How did we win before? We did not quit, we did not fear, we did not stop the fight until there was total victory. What has changed? Political correctness. Our Founding Fathers would be appalled.

"Not all the treasures of the world, so far as I believe, could have induced me to support an offensive war, for I think it murder; but if a thief breaks into my house, burns and destroys my property, and kills or threatens to kill me, or those that are in it, and to "bind me in all cases whatsoever" to his absolute will, am I to suffer it?" --Thomas Paine (The American Crisis, No. 1, 19 December 1776), Reference: Paine, Collected Writings, Library of America, p. 97

We have the 2nd Amendment for cases such as these.

"[I]f the public are bound to yield obedience to laws to which they cannot give their approbation, they are slaves to those who make such laws and enforce them." --Candidus (in the Boston Gazette, 20 January 1772), Reference: Original Intent, Barton (259); original Boston Gazette (January 20, 1772)

Here, here! So what are you going to do about the Communist ACLU?
