The Federalist: Founders' Daily Quote 7/17/2005

"Resolve to perform what you ought. Perform without fail what you resolve." -- Benjamin Franklin (Autobiography, 1771) Reference: Benjamin Franklin: Writings, Lemay, ed., Library of America (1385)

Right on!

"Sometimes it is said that man can not be trusted with government of himself. Can he, then, be trusted with the government of others? Or have we found angels in the forms of kings to govern him? Let history answer this question." -- Thomas Jefferson (First Inaugural Address, 3/4 1801) Reference: Jefferson: Writings, Peterson ed., Library of America

Here ye, here ye! It will be well with me to govern myself, as long as the goal is virtue.

"The God who gave us life, gave us liberty at the same time; the hand of force may destroy, but cannot disjoin them."-- Thomas Jefferson (Summary View of the Rights of British America, August 1774) Reference: Jefferson: Writings, Peterson ed., Library of America (122)

Let us take a moment for those whose liberty was cut short upon this disastrous day. Keep in mind those who are injured, missing, and dead. Keep also those who love them. Keep them close to your hearts so they may comfort. Keep them close in your thoughts so they may not feel abandoned. Keep them close in your prayers so they may feel healing. Most of all, keep them them close and never forget, for you may be next and in need of such. Yes. Today we are all Britons.

"[R]eligion and virtue are the only foundations, not of republicanism and of all free government, but of social felicity under all government and in all the combinations of human society." -- John Adams (letter in response to Rush letter above, 8/28 1811) Reference: The Works of John Adams, C.F. Adams, ed., vol. 9 (636)

"Of all the cares or concerns of government, the direction of war most peculiarly demands those qualities which distinguish the exercise of power by a single hand. The direction of war implies the direction of the common strength; and the power of directing and employing the common strength, forms a usual and essential part in the definition of the executive authority." -- Alexander Hamilton (Federalist No. 74, 3/25 1788) Reference: The Federalist, verified by Joe Lindsley

So! It IS the duty of the President of the United States of America to wage war, the Congress to authorize war and, seeing as we voted for these representatives, to support our country. If we disagree, we can show our disapproval at the ballot box, eh?

I sure wish all this bickering over how it started would stop. We're there. If you do not like it, what is your plan? That would be more interesting than your complaints. Thanks everyone. Have a great day.
