E-mails indicate link between FARC leader, Cubas' kidnappers

The coded e-mails are part of strong evidence that a top Colombian FARC rebel who lived in Venezuela advised the leftists here who kidnapped the daughter of former President Raul Cubas, officials of Paraguay, Colombia and the United States told The Miami Herald.

The link has prompted strong concerns because it is the first known case of the FARC exporting to other parts of Latin America its vast expertise in kidnapping for ransom - a crime that it has turned into a virtual industry in Colombia to fill its war coffers. [read more]
Russia dismisses US concerns over arms sales to Venezuela

MOSCOW (AP) - Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has shrugged off Washington's warnings against Russian arms sales to Venezuela, saying the deal was a bilateral issue in line with international law.

The US State Department said last Thursday it is "extremely troubled" by Russian arms deliveries to Venezuela that reportedly include 100,000 Kalashnikov assault rifles and aircraft, signalling concern that some of the weapons might be turned over to leftist rebels in neighbouring Colombia [read more]
